Banded Together - The Naugatuck Valley Project Story
The Aftermath of Industry
When industry abandoned the Naugatuck Valley, it left as a legacy a 45-mile corridor with 189 contaminated "brownfield" industrial sites. In response, the NVP has proposed to "create jobs that save our environment." Successes have included:
- initiating a coalition that won an $800,000 EPA grant for the Valley Brownfields Pilot Program.
- creating an Environmental Remediation Technician Training Program at the Naugatuck Valley Community College that has trained 57 technicians and placed 40 of them in its first two years.
- redevelopment of the historical Plume and Atwood plant in Thomaston.
